Los Angeles, estate 1992, caldo torrido. Bill rimane bloccato con l'auto in un ingorgo, scende, la chiude e "va a casa" con una passeggiata di quaranta chilometri che si trasforma in un'odissea violenta. A quella di Bill fa da riscontro la vicenda parallela di un poliziotto al suo ultimo giorno di servizio: è lui che intuisce l'itinerario di sangue e violenza che Bill traccia attraverso la città.
