1386. Dopo essere tornato dalla guerra, il cavaliere Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) scopre che sua moglie Marguerite (Jodie Comer) è stata violentata dallo scudiero e suo amico Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver). Essendo al tempo la testimonianza della donna troppo debole, la vittima dello stupro non viene creduta durante il processo e accusata di dire falsità. È così che Jean per difendere l'onore di sua moglie decide di sfidare a duello Jacques, seguendo il principio del "Deus Vult", ovvero il sopravvissuto per volontà divina avrebbe vinto la contesa. Solo uno tra i due potrà quindi sopravvivere a quello che è stato l'ultimo duello giudiziario nella storia francese...
