Maria Antonietta, la figlia della regina d'Austria viene promessa in sposa appena quattordicenne a Luigi XVI, il futuro re di Francia. Nonostante la sua riluttanza, la giovane si trasferisce a Versailles, ma non riuscirà mai ad entrare in sintonia col popolo francese che in primis, non le perdona il fatto di essere straniera, così allo scoppio della Rivoluzione, quando Maria Antonietta si schiera dalla parte dell'aristocrazia, una volta catturata, sarà condannata dal tribunale rivoluzionario alla ghigliottina.
