Melanie Daniels incontra Mitch Brenner in un negozio di animali di San Francisco. Lui vorrebbe comprare una coppia di inseparabili per regalarli a sua sorella per il suo compleanno, lei finge di essere una commessa del negozio, lui non le crede, ma sta al gioco. Melanie decide poi di comprare una coppia di inseparabili e di andare a Bodega Bay, un tranquillo paesino costiero, dove Mitch passa i suoi fine settimana con la sorellina e la madre, per fargli una sorpresa. Al suo arrivo viene attaccata da un gabbiano, e sarĂ  il primo di una lunga, inspiegabile serie di attacchi da parte degli uccelli...
