Dixon Steele è uno sceneggiatore di Hollywood, dotato di talento ma con un carattere violento e irascibile. Viene coinvolto nell'omicidio di una guardarobiera, essendo stato l'ultima persona a vederla in vita, e la polizia lo sospetta immediatamente, a causa del suo carattere, ma Laurel, una attrice sua vicina di casa, depone in suo favore. L'amicizia fra Dixon e Laurel muta in amore, ma lei non è certa della sua completa innocenza e il loro rapporto entra in crisi. Non basterà scoprire che il vero colpevole è il fidanzato della vittima, per riavvicinare i due amanti.
