Il pianeta Cybertron è abitato da una particolare generazione di robot trasformisti divisi in due fazioni: gli Autobots, guidati dal buono e saggio Optimus Prime, e i Decepticons, comandati dal malvagio Megatron . Ogni Transformer ha la capacità di tramutarsi in un diverso tipo di meccanismo - dai mezzi di trasporto alle armi - che lo contraddistingue dagli altri. A causa della carenza di carburante su Cybertron, entrambi i gruppi partono alla ricerca di un pianeta in cui reperire i materiali atti alla creazione dei cubi di Energon, la loro fonte di energia. Dopo un'attenta perlustrazione dello spazio, la scelta cade sulla Terra, ricca di elementi minerali e chimici. Giunti sul nostro pianeta, i Transformers si mescolano agli abitanti tramutandosi nei più comuni automezzi, velivoli o imbarcazioni, ma ben presto tra Autobots e Decepticons si scatena una guerra per il controllo del pianeta...
