In una sera del1962, mentre un aereo precipita sulla loro casetta unifamiliare con giardino, i Webber, un marito geniale e ossessionato e una moglie incinta simile alle casalinghe televisive, si rinchiudono in uno spazioso bunker e restano con il loro bambino Adam, reclusi per trentacinque anni. Un frammento della cultura e della società statunitensi diventano un reperto archeologico, mentre Los Angeles, in superficie, cambia e decade. Arriva il giorno in cui il giovane Adam dovrà uscire dal rifugio per incontrare la sua Eve.
