Gli amici Harold Lee e Kumar Patel passano il loro tempo a fare baldoria bevendo birra e fumando marijuana. Harold è un ragazzo che lavora in banca, dove viene maltrattato dai colleghi che gli affibbiano del lavoro extra da svolgere nel weekend. Kumar invece vive senza prendersi delle responsabilità, mandando a monte tutti i colloqui di lavoro che il padre gli fissa. Durante uno dei loro venerdì sera di divertimento, dopo qualche spinello di troppo, i giovani vengono assaliti da una improvvisa fame chimica: sarà uno spot pubblicitario della catena White Castle a risolvere i loro problemi. I due inizieranno un viaggio rocambolesco e pieno di tragicomiche disavventure alla ricerca di un mega-hamburger che possa saziare la loro fame.
