In viaggio coast to coast, da Los Angeles a Chicago, sul lussuoso treno "Silver Streak", George Caldwell, giovane e timido editore, conosce Hilly Burns, segretaria di un celebre studioso di Rembrandt, il prof. Schreiner. Durante il tragitto questi viene ucciso. George scopre che, grazie ad alcune lettere di cui era in possesso, l'ucciso poteva provare la colossale truffa ai danni dello Stato compiuta da un certo Roger Devereau a mezzo di falsi dipinti.
