Mike Banning è un agente della sicurezza al servizio del presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America. Brillante e intraprendente, è ben voluto dalla First Lady e da suo figlio, un ragazzino di pochi anni che sogna un giorno di servire il Paese. Alla Vigilia di Natale la donna muore in un tragico incidente, 'sacrificata' insieme a due agenti per salvare la vita del presidente. Sollevato dall'incarico e costretto dietro alla scrivania, Mike conduce una vita ordinaria a cui proprio non riesce ad abituarsi. L'attacco alla Casa Bianca da parte di un gruppo di estremisti nord coreani, che vorrebbero 'detonare' gli States, gli offre finalmente l'occasione di tornare operativo. Sopravvissuto ai colleghi caduti come mosche nei corridoi della residenza presidenziale, Mike prova a raggiungere il bunker dove il Presidente è tenuto in ostaggio con il suo staff. Mentre l'America trattiene il respiro, l'agente Banning si riprende gloria e reputazione.
