Stati Uniti, 2020. Si fa festa per la partenza del primo terzetto di astronauti diretto a Marte. Su una piattaforma orbitante Woody e Jim osserveranno il lavoro di Luke e della sua squadra. 13 mesi dopo solo Luke sopravvive a una tempesta di sabbia scaturita da una montagna che il gruppo voleva esplorare alla ricerca di acqua. Woody, sua moglie Terri, Jim e il tecnico Phil scendono sul pianeta quasi un anno dopo. Ma una serie di piccole falle conduce all'abbandono dell'astronave e al sacrificio di Woody. Su Marte i sopravvissuti trovano uno scarmigliato Luke che li conduce dinanzi a un'enorme scultura di un volto. Segno inequivocabile della presenza di un'altra civiltà.
