A poche settimane dalla pensione, il sergente di polizia Edward X. Delaney, si trova in gravi difficoltà. La moglie Barbara è stata ricoverata per un calcolo renale e per l'aggravarsi della situazione è stata sottoposta a un intevento chirurgico. Contemporaneamente al Distretto 27 è arrivato un nuovo responsabile che disprezza i metodi della cosiddetta vecchia guardia. Edward, dividendo il suo tempo tra l'ospedale e i problemi dell'ufficio, comincia le indagini su due omicidi, archiviati dal suo capo come anomali.
