Phil e Claire sono una coppia media, sposata con figli, stanziata in un medio quartiere residenziale di New York, alle prese con i problemi tipici di chi, a qualche anno dal matrimonio, soffre di un calo del desiderio e dell'affiatamento. Per rimediare decidono di passare una serata in grande stile in un ristorante esclusivo di Manhattan. Arrivati lì però scoprono che di trovare un posto non se ne parla nemmeno e, infastiditi da come il personale li tratti da nullità, dopo aver notato che nessuno rivendica un tavolo libero per due si fingono i legittimi prenotatori di quel posto. Questo scambio di identità innesca una girandola di equivoci, incidenti, fughe e travestimenti con al centro polizia corrotta, mafia locale e un politico con foto sconce da nascondere.
