Alle soglie dell'anno Mille, nella raffinata Baghdad, il giovane Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan vive in una posizione sociale di alto rango, ma questi privilegi finiscono quando viene scoperta la sua relazione proibita con una donna. Ibn quindi vorrebbe ripartire, quando all'improvviso interviene una vecchia indovina che lancia un ammonimento: tredici guerrieri dovranno essere utilizzati per sconfiggere il nemico che perseguita il popolo vichingo, ma il tredicesimo dovrà essere uno straniero di stirpe diversa.
