In un castello abitato dai fantasmi giunge il dottor Harvey, accompagnato dalla figlia adolescente Kat. Il suo compito è quello di cacciare gli indesiderati ospiti su incarico della perfida donna che ha ereditato il maniero. Il buon fantasmino Casper si innamora di Kat: i due soffrono di solitudine e potrebbero trovare reciproco conforto, ma la loro essenza è troppo diversa. Kat, poi, ha perso la madre di recente e vorrebbe rivederla. Nel momento decisivo in cui Casper avrebbe l'opportunità di reincarnarsi, grazie a una macchina inventata da suo padre, ci rinuncia per ridare la vita al dottor Harvey che è rimasto vittima di un incidente. Sarà la madre di Kat, che è uno spirito sereno, a consentirgli di ballare per una notte con la figlia sotto sembianze umane.
