Il barone Manfred von Richthofen (Matthias Schweighofer) è il più temuto e celebrato pilota dell'air force tedesca durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Per lui i combattimenti aerei sono pure sfide tecniche, quasi prove di natura sportiva, allontanando da sè il pensiero delle terribili conseguenze della guerra. Ma dopo essersi innamorato dell'infermiera Kate (Lena Headey), Manfred si interroga sulle sue responsibilità del suo lavoro.
