Freddie Quell è un soldato uscito dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale con il sistema nervoso a pezzi. A poco servono le cure che l'esercito gli offre, se non a rendere esplicita un'ossessione per il sesso. A ciò si aggiunge un forte interesse per l'alcol che si traduce in misture che lui stesso si prepara e che offre agli altri con esiti non sempre positivi. Finché un giorno, in modo del tutto casuale, Freddie incontra Lancaster Dodd. Costui ha inventato un metodo di introspezione che sperimenta sul disturbato Marine, il quale sembra trarne giovamento. Da quel momento ha inizio un sodalizio che li vedrà percorrere insieme un lungo tratto di strada. Anche se il loro viaggio finirà con l'offrire loro esiti assolutamente diversi.
