Sarah (Robin Tunney) è una diciassettenne disadattata e solitaria appena trasferitasi a Los Angeles con il padre. A scuola conosce un trio di ragazze speciali, che fa gruppo a sé ed è malvisto dagli altri studenti: Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Bonnie (Neve Campbell) e Rochelle (Rachel True). Le tre la iniziano all’esoterismo e la vorrebbero nel loro gruppo per raggiungere la forza di cui necessitano per compiere un rito misterioso. Sarah intanto ha un flirt con Chris (Skeet Ulrich), che però le gioca un tiro mancino. Ciascuna delle ragazze ha dei problemi con cui non riesce a fare i conti e spera in una vita migliore. Stringono un rituale patto di sangue. Cominciano a vedere che i loro incantesimi funzionano e realizzano i loro desideri: Bonnie guarisce dalle vecchie ustioni alla pelle che le deturpavano la schiena, Sarah fa innamorare perdutamente Chris, Rochelle (che è di colore) si vendica di una biondina razzista e Nancy, che è povera, diventa ricca. Ma le cose si complicano.
