L'avvocato Paul Biegler viene invitato ad assumere la difesa del tenente Manion, accusato di omicidio: egli infatti ha ucciso Barney Quill, che aveva oltraggiato sua moglie Laura. Biegler esita prima di assumere l'incarico, poi finisce per accettare, cedendo alle insistenze del suo socio Parnell. Si tratta di un processo difficile: l'imputato è reo confesso, non vi sono testimoni a discarico, l'accusatore pubblico, un avversario politico di Biegler, si fa assistere da un grande avvocato della capitale. Inoltre la vittima era un uomo che contava molte amicizie. Biegler studia il caso in tutti i suoi particolari ed alla luce anche di precedenti giudiziari, viene alla conclusione che effettivamente la gelosia provoca talvolta reazioni sproporzionate.
