Tony Stark è Iron Man e ora, dopo 6 mesi, che la notizia è di pubblico dominio il governo e le compagnie concorrenti, non troppo liete che la pace nel mondo sia mantenuta da un deterrente che non gli appartiene, tentano di appropriarsi dell'armatura: "Ho privatizzato con successo la pace" risponde Stark a chi lo accusa di essere fuori dal controllo statale. Non è tuttavia questo il problema più grosso del miliardario con l'hobby del supereroismo. Il palladio, elemento utile a far funzionare l'armatura, lo sta lentamente uccidendo inquinandogli il sangue e il brillante inventore non riesce a trovare un rimedio. Come se non bastasse, nel mezzo di una corsa automobolistica promozionale, a turbare la pace mondiale si presenta Ivan Vanko, figlio di un vecchio collaboratore di Howard Stark (il padre di Tony), colmo di rancore, volontà di vendetta e in possesso dei brevetti originali di molte invenzioni della Stark.
