Matilda nasce in una famiglia benestante, in cui i genitori e il fratello la trattano in modo indifferente e la considerano una seccatura. All'età di sei anni la bambina riesce finalmente ad andare a scuola grazie ad un accordo fra il padre e la terribile preside di una scuola: Agatha Trinciabue, una donna arrogante che ritiene tutti i bambini una condanna. Fortunatamente Matilda trova nella sua maestra, la signorina Jennifer Honey, nipote della preside, una donna molto dolce e una grande amica.
