Inghilterra, 18esimo secolo. La regina Anna è una creatura fragile dalla salute precaria e il temperamento capriccioso. Facile alle lusinghe e sensibile ai piaceri della carne, si lascia pesantemente influenzare dalle persone a lei più vicine, anche in tema di politica internazionale. E il principale ascendente su di lei è esercitato da Lady Sarah, astuta nobildonna dal carattere di ferro con un'agenda politica ben precisa: portare avanti la guerra in corso contro la Francia per negoziare da un punto di forza - anche a costo di raddoppiare le tasse sui sudditi del Regno. Il più diretto rivale di Lady Sarah è l'ambizioso politico Robert Harley, che farebbe qualunque cosa pur di accaparrarsi i favori della regina. Ma non sarà lui a contendere a Lady Sarah il ruolo di Favorita: giunge infatti a corte Abigail Masham, lontana parente di Lady Sarah, molto più in basso nel sistema di caste inglese.
