A proposito di Davis, racconta una settimana nella vita di un giovane cantante folk che si trova davanti a un bivio, mentre cerca faticosamente di farsi strada nel mondo musicale del Greenwich Village del 1961. Llewyn Davis chitarra al seguito, stretto nella sua giacca nel tentativo di difendersi dallo spietato inverno newyorchese è tormentato da ostacoli che sembrano insormontabili, alcuni dei quali creati da lui stesso. Affidandosi alla generosità di amici e sconosciuti per vivere in città, arrabbattandosi con lavori qualsiasi, Llewyn parte per un viaggio che lo porterà dalle ‘baskethouses’ del Village (i caffè newyorchesi in cui i musicisti vengono pagati dal pubblico con soldi raccolti in un cestino) ad un club deserto di Chicago un’assurda odissea per un’audizione con un potente impresario musicale e poi di nuovo indietro a New York.
