Freddy è morto (questo si sapeva) e nessuno ad Elm Street si ricorda più di lui. Questo è un problema, perché Freddy prende la sua forza dalla paura che fa alla gente, e dunque non può tornare a movimentare gli incubi dei malcapitati discendenti dei suoi primi clienti se questi, inspiegabilmente, non si ricordano neanche della sua esistenza. Il piano è semplice: resuscitare un collega di tutto rispetto – Jason Voorhes - e mandarlo a sfoltire drasticamente il numero dei vivi ad Elm Street, dopodiché gli idioti adolescenti del posto non esiteranno a confondere i due e ad attribuire i massacri a tale Freddy Kruger di cui tutti in paese sembrano sapere ma di cui nessuno vuol parlare. Si ricorderanno di lui e lo sogneranno, dandogli così potere sufficiente a tornare. Ma a questo punto Jason non sembra disposto a farsi da parte, e Jason non è un ragazzo molto ragionevole.
