Bruce Banner si è nascosto in una labirintica favela del Brasile, dove lavora in una fabbrica che imbottiglia bibite al guaranà e conta i giorni "senza crisi", allenandosi a mantenere basse le pulsazioni cardiache agendo sulla respirazione e sul rifiuto delle provocazioni. Sono più di cento giorni che vive così, reprimendo gli impulsi del corpo e gli slanci del cuore, che è rimasto negli Stati Uniti, accanto alla dottoressa Ross. Ma basta una goccia di sangue, perduta involontariamente, a innescare la fine o, per essere più precisi, un nuovo inizio. La macchina da guerra americana, guidata dal generale Ross, è immediatamente sulle sue tracce. Braccato, Bruce non può che cedere alla sua nemesi, strapparsi le vesti e trasformarsi nel gigante verde.
