Judy e Peter, rimasti orfani, prendono dimora con una giovane zia in una grande villa da tempo sfitta. Nella soffitta, s'imbattono in un gioco da tavolo dal nome esotico e cominciano una partita. Ma già al primo colpo di dadi è chiaro che Jumanji non è un gioco come gli altri. Rampicanti carnivori, zanzare giganti, zebre ed elefanti escono dal nulla e distruggono la casa e la città. Dalla giungla torna anche Alan (Robin Williams), un uomo che 26 anni prima, giocando con un'amichetta, era finito sulla casella sbagliata ed era scomparso, dato per morto. Come porre fine all'incubo? Solo terminando la partita.
