Duello a distanza, durante la guerra 1939-45, tra incrociatore americano e sommergibile tedesco. Affondano entrambi, ma i due comandanti fanno a gara in cavalleria per salvare i superstiti e salvarsi a vicenda. Tecnicamente ineccepibile e con qualche puntiglio documentaristico, il film di Powell, attore passato alla regia, è piatto come un mare in bonaccia. Manca di invenzioni e di personaggi. Non dice niente, ma lo dice bene. Da un romanzo del Comandante D.A. Rayner. Oscar per gli effetti speciali a Walter Rossi.
