In un villaggio della Francia del '700 vive la radiosa Belle appassionata alla lettura e un po' stanca della vita ripetitiva che le è toccato in sorte di condurre. Un giorno il padre (un anziano inventore un po' eccentrico) chiede asilo in un castello non sapendo che lì vive la Bestia. Costui è un Principe che, in seguito ad un atto di egoismo, è stato trasformato in un animale. L'incantesimo si romperà solo se una fanciulla si innamorerà di lui prima che una rosa, contenuta in una campana di cristallo, perda l'ultimo petalo. Belle, che è oppressa dalla corte di Gaston, il bello e bullo del villaggio, va alla ricerca del padre e, trovatolo nel castello, si offre in ostaggio alla Bestia al suo posto. Da quel momento tra i due si sviluppa un non facile rapporto.
