Nel 1987 i giocatori di football americano scesero in sciopero. Per evitare disastri a sponsor e società, i presidenti assunsero giocatori non professionisti. L'allenatore McGinty (Hackman) mette insieme una squadra di strani personaggi, fra cui Shane Falco (Reeves), l'unico (ex) professionista. Le "riserve" sapranno comunque farsi onore.
