Un Boeing 747 diretto a Los Angeles viene dirottato a causa del maltempo sull'aeroporto di Salt Lake City. Per la medesima ragione viene dirottato sullo stesso aeroporto anche un aereo da turismo, che va a schiantarsi proprio sulla cabina del Boeing. Il secondo pilota e il marconista muoiono, il comandante resta gravemente ferito. Prende i comandi la capo hostess, guidata dalla torre di controllo dal direttore della compagnia Alan Murdoc (che è anche suo fidanzato) e da un altro dirigente che ha a bordo la famiglia. Murdoc raggiunge l'aereo a bordo di un elicottero militare e si cala nella cabina prendendo il comando del velivolo.
