Los Angeles, marzo 1928. Un sabato Christine Collins lascia a casa da solo il giudizioso figlio Walter che ha avuto da un uomo che li ha abbandonati. Al ritorno dal lavoro fa una terribile scoperta: il bambino non c'è più e di lui si è persa ogni traccia. Finché, 5 mesi dopo, la polizia locale sembra aver risolto il caso. Consegna infatti a Christine un bambino che dice di esser Walter e che un po' gli assomiglia. La madre è però certa che è suo figlio ed è supportata in questo anche da altre persone che lo conoscevano bene, a partire dalla maestra. Le autorità di polizia, sostenute da un'opinione pubblica desiderosa di rassicuranti lieto fine, insistono nella loro versione fino a decidere di internare Christine attribuendole disturbi mentali che l'avrebbero spinta a non riconoscere nel sedicente Walter il proprio figlio. Christine però non si arrende e, sostenuta dal reverendo Guistav Briegleb, continua a lottare perché le ricerche di Walter continuino.
