Mitch McDeere, fresco di laurea in giurisprudenza, viene ingaggiato da un prestigioso studio legale di Memphis. Il lavoro lo impegna a tal punto da fargli trascurare la giovane moglie, che ne soffre. Partendo dai sospetti sulla morte di due suoi colleghi, Mitch cerca di scoprire per chi lavori lo studio e si rende conto che c’è molto marcio nascosto. Corre grossi rischi, ma ne esce trionfante.
