Bobby Boucher è il "ragazzo dell'acqua", quello cioè che deve far trovare agli atleti impegnati sul campo di football americano l'acqua sempre pronta alla giusta temperatura. Bobby è un trentunenne ritardato che parla con voce strana e ha una madre che ne fagocita la vita. Fatto oggetto di scherzi più o meno pesanti da tutti il nostro eroe è però più ricco interiormente di molti di quelli che lo circondano. Lo dimostrerà quando troverà lavoro presso una squadra di scarso valore guidata dall’incerto allenatore Kline.
