Savannah 1981: il cronista John Kelso giunge in città per scrivere un articolo sulla festa di Natale organizzata dal miliardario Jim Williams, antiquario divenuto ricco da poco tempo: l'avvenimento richiama molti invitati e durante la sua permanenza Kelso fa la conoscenza di diversi pittoreschi personaggi della città. Durante la festa assiste a una lite tra Jim e il giovane scapestrato Billy, che irrompe con una scenata nello studio dell'antiquario, visibilmente drogato e ubriaco. Dopo qualche ora, a festa terminata, si consuma una tragedia lontano da occhi indiscreti. Il giovane Billy viene ucciso da Jim, che dichiara la legittima difesa.
