Trasposizione moderna del Cyrano di Bergerac. Steve Martin fa il capo pompiere di una città di provincia. Intelligente, colto, simpatico, ma afflitto da un enorme naso, si innamora di una bellissima bionda, ma lei gli preferisce un collega più bello. Martin è talmente innamorato che si offre come consigliere erotico del bello (molto imbranato in amore). Quando però costui muore in un incidente, Martin potrà rivelarsi alla bellissima, che scopre di amarlo nonostante il nasone.
