Il penultimo film di Hawks – prima di Rio Lobo (1970) – è una variazione sui temi e i personaggi di Un dollaro d'onore (1959), basata su una sceneggiatura scritta da Leigh Brackett, sua collaboratrice fin dai tempi di Il grande sonno (1946). Non è né una ripetizione né una parodia, ma semmai un'elegia sui vecchi tempi, sorvegliata dall'angelo custode dell'ironia. Per Hawks anche gli eroi invecchiano, ma lo sanno e non nascondono le proprie infermità dell'anima e del corpo.
