La serie racconta le vicende di sei genitori più cinque figli: Jay Pritchett, un uomo di mezz’età sposato con una colombiana molto più giovane di lui; i suoi due figli (avuti durante il primo matrimonio): Claire, casalinga con marito e prole, e Mitchell, fidanzato con un altro uomo e di ritorno dal Vietnam dopo l’adozione di una bambina.
