Una volta cresciuta, Denise (Lisa Bonet) lascia la casa de I Robinson per iscriversi al college e diventare protagonista di uno spin-off tutto suo. E così eccola matricola dell’esclusivo Hilman College in Georgia, frequentato anni prima dai suoi genitori ma lontano dalle sue abitudini quotidiane, dai suoi amici, dalla bambagia che la avvolgeva. Un nuovo mondo – tanto per dirla con il titolo originale – contraddistinto da impegno e severità, ma anche da scherzi e goliardate tra coetanei. Tra di loro spiccano le due compagne di stanza di Denise: l’idealista e romantica Maggie Lawton (Marisa Tomei) e la ventiseienne divorziata Vinson (Dawnn Lewis).
