1944. Infuria la II Guerra Mondiale. E i coraggiosi piloti afroamericani del Tuskegee Airmen combattono due guerre allo stesso tempo: quella nei cieli contro il nemico, e quella contro la discriminazione razziale tra i loro stessi commilitoni. Proprio per via del colore della loro pelle i piloti capitanati da Martin "Easy" Julian (Nate Parker) sono stati tenuti a terra in patria per tropppo tempo, o assegnati a missioni di scarsa importanza nonostante le loro qualità e le loro capacità. Ma le cose stanno per cambiare. In Europa le cose sono sempre più difficili, e il Pentagono si decide ad utilizzare il Tuskegee per missioni. Il Colonnello A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) affida ai piloti un compito cruciale e giudicato pericolosissimo: fare da scorta ai bombardieri alleati in pieno giorno, ruolo che nemmeno i piloti della RAF si sentono di affrontare.
