James Ferraday, comandante del "Tigerfish", un sommergibile nucleare americano, riceve l'ordine di intervenire in soccorso della "Base artica Zebra", una stazione meteorologica inglese situata al Polo Nord. Costretto a imbarcare due civili e un gruppo di marines il comandante ha ragione di ritenere che si tratti di qualcosa di diverso da una missione di salvataggio. Infatti nella zona è caduto un satellite sovietico con a bordo preziosissime informazioni per la Cia. Solo che anche i russi non sono stati a guardare...
