Rogue One: A Star Wars Story è il primo capitolo di una nuova avventurosa serie cinematografica che esplora i personaggi e gli eventi che ruotano intorno alla saga di Guerre Stellari. Il film racconta la storia di un improbabile gruppo di eroi che intraprendono, in un periodo di conflitto, una missione per sottrarre i piani della più potente arma di distruzione di massa mai ideata dall'impero, la Morte Nera. Questo evento, fondamentale per la storia di Star Wars, spingerà delle persone ordinarie a unirsi per realizzare imprese straordinarie, diventando parte di qualcosa di più grande. Rogue One è ambientato prima degli eventi narrati in Star Wars Episodio IV: Una Nuova Speranza e si discosta dai film della saga, mantenendo comunque una certa familiarità con l'universo di Star Wars.
