Harry Sultenfuss è vedovo dal 1961, anno in cui nasce la piccola Vera e in cui sua moglie muore di parto. Harry di mestiere fa l'impresario di pompe funebri, stravede per la figlioletta, ormai undicenne, e non ha nessuna intenzione di risposarsi. Vera è un po' strana, è innamorata di uno dei suoi insegnanti, ha un solo amico , l'occhialuto e timido Thomas, e somatizza le malattie di cui sono stati affetti i clienti del papà. Senza contare che è gelosissima del babbo. Così quando Harry comincia ad avvicinarsi a Shelly, lei non la prende bene. Jamie Lee Curtis truccatrice di cadaveri è una buona idea. Così come tutto il lato macabro del film. L'altra grande idea è quella di far morire Culkin per la puntura di un'ape. Insomma la storia è un buon racconto di formazione. Quel che non funziona è la regia di Zieff che la butta troppo spesso sul sentimentale.
