Truman Burbank nasce ripreso da una telecamera. Poi, per trent'anni continuerà ad esser ripreso a sua insaputa da telecamere che lo seguiranno in ogni luogo della sua vita, per strada, al lavoro, a letto. Lui non lo sa, ma fa parte di uno show televisivo. Tutto ciò che c'è intorno a lui è un set, le persone sono attori e comparse, le case, la polizia, i vigili del fuoco, tutto è set, persino l'acqua del mare è fasulla. Sua moglie e il suo migliore amico sono attori. Sopra tutti c'è Christof, dio-demiurgo-produttore, che gestisce la vita del poveretto. Naturalmente tutta l'America impazzisce per il programma verità, in virtù della regola del voyeurismo, molla televisiva irresistibile.
