Nella cittadina marittima statunitense di Beach City vivono le Crystal Gems, un gruppo di Gemme (una specie extraterrestre ultramillenaria, munita di tecnologia avanzatissima e dotata di poteri sovrumani e "magici") dedite a proteggere la Terra e l'intera umanità da qualsivoglia minaccia: esso - formato dalle uniche Gemme rimaste sul pianeta - è composto da Garnet, Ametista e Perla; a loro si aggiunge anche Steven, un ragazzino metà Gemma e metà umano che ha ereditato la pietra da Quarzo Rosa, sua madre nonché precedente leader delle Crystal Gems. I corpi delle Gemme, che hanno sembianze femminili, sono proiezioni di energia solida scaturite dalla loro relativa gemma, incastonata in questo corpo e dalla quale possono perfino materializzare armi "magiche" da usare in combattimento.
