Nel 50 a.C. in Egitto, re Tolomeo ripudia la sorella Cleopatra cacciandola da Alessandria. Giulio Cesare, dopo aver sconfitto Pompeo al termine di una cruenta guerra civile interviene personalmente e tramite la sua autorità destituisce Tolomeo dalla carica di faraone e nomina Cleopatra unica sovrana d'Egitto. Il rapporto tra i due è molto forte e con il passare del tempo diventa passionale. Cleopatra da a Cesare un figlio, Cesarione; ma questa situazione non è ben vista a Roma dove i senatori temono per le sorti della repubblica. Cesare difatti, vuole il potere assoluto; una volta eletto imperatore egli potrà nominare suo figlio come legittimo erede.
