OJ e Emerald Haywood, fratello e sorella, hanno ereditato un ranch ad Agua Dolce, non lontano da Hollywood, dopo la morte del padre Otis sr., avvenuta in circostanze difficili da spiegare scientificamente. L'attività di famiglia riguarda l'addestramento di cavalli selvaggi per l'industria del cinema, ma gli Haywood vantano origini ben più nobili e sostengono di discendere dal fantino bahamense immortalato da Eadweard Muybridge nella sequenza di fotografie del 1878, nota come la prima successione di immagini in movimento (in sostanza il primo film) mai girata. Mentre OJ cerca di vendere i propri cavalli a Jupiter, ex attore divenuto proprietario di un parco dei divertimenti western ad Agua Dolce, avvengono fatti sempre più strani e inspiegabili al ranch degli Haywood, tanto da far pensare a una presenza extraterrestre e ostile.
