Tre poliziotti a cavallo inseguono un fuggitivo nell'outback australiano. Siamo nel 1922 e a guidarli è una guida aborigena. Nel gruppo pian piano serpeggiano i dissidi anche in seguito ad episodi violenti e nascono domande mai poste prima: cosa divide bianchi e neri e chi ha diritto di comandare? Rolf de Heer abbandona le 'diversità' singole (l'handicap in particolare) che erano state al centro dei suoi tre film precedenti e affronta un tema più vasto come quello della persecuzione degli aborigeni nei primi decenni del secolo scorso. Può farlo solo agli inizi del nuovo millennio perché prima questo era un tema da evitare in Australia. Riesce a fondere spettacolarità e messaggio coadiuvato anche da un attore aborigeno che, terminate le riprese di questo ed altri film, torna nella sua baraccopoli
