Un'insegnante d'inglese in pensione, Jessica B. Fletcher, dopo essere rimasta vedova intorno ai cinquant'anni del marito Frank, diventa quasi per caso una scrittrice di successo. Nonostante la fama e la fortuna ottenute, Jessica continua a vivere una vita semplice e salutare, risiedendo nel piccolo paese di Cabot Cove, sulla costa del Maine, e coltivando le sue vecchie amicizie, che la portano spesso in giro per il mondo.
