Un'insegnante d'inglese in pensione, Jessica B. Fletcher, dopo essere rimasta vedova intorno ai cinquant'anni del marito Frank, diventa quasi per caso una scrittrice di successo. Nonostante la fama e la fortuna ottenute, Jessica continua a vivere una vita semplice e salutare, risiedendo nel piccolo paese di Cabot Cove, sulla costa del Maine, e coltivando le sue vecchie amicizie, che la portano spesso in giro per il mondo. La signora Fletcher avrà a che fare con una serie di omicidi che ne risvegliano l'insaziabile curiosità, portandola a risolvere i casi della più varia natura.
