Roma e il mondo sono in lutto per la morte del Santo Padre. Distrutto l'anello piscatorio, il camerlengo deve fare fronte al rapimento dei quattro cardinali favoriti alla successione pontificia e alla minaccia della distruzione della Città del Vaticano ad opera degli Illuminati, una confraternita venuta dal passato a rivendicare il primato della scienza sulla Chiesa e sullo Spirito.
